هذا العمل ترجمة عربية لكتاب جون ستيوارت ميل النفعية (Utilitarianism) المنشور في الجزء العاشر ضمن الأعمال الكاملة لجون ستيوارت ميل (Collected Works of John Stuart Mill) تحت عنوان محاولات في الأخلاق والدين والمجتمع (Essays on Ethics, Religion and Society) ويندرج الكتاب ضمن النظرية التي أسسها جيريمي بنثام (Jeremy Bentham) التي تعتبر اليوم من الشروط الضرورية لفهم الفلسفة الأخلاقية المعاصرة. في بداية القرن العشرين تم إعادة تأهيل النفعية من خلال كتاب إيلي هاليفي (Elie Halévy) الموسوم تكوّن الراديكالية الفلسفية (La formation du radicalisme philosophique) الذي أصبح بدوره من الكتب المعتمدة في دراسة النفعية في البلدان الأنجلوساكسونية.
