كان نابليون بونابارت واحداً من أقوى الرجال في العالم، وُصف بأنه كان صاحب شخصية معقدة وإرادة فولاذية، حيث إنه سعى للسيطرة على إمبراطورية غنية وأن يجعل فرنسا الدولة الأهم في العالم. على الرغم من أنه كان شخصية مهمة في التاريخ الفرنسي، إلا أن عائلة نابليون كانت من أصل إيطالي. كان اسم والده هو كارلو ماريا بونابارت، وهو نسل من نبلاء عاشوا في منطقة تسكاني في إيطاليا. والدته كانت ماريا لاتيتيا رامولينو، امرأة صارمة تزوجت في سن الـ14 وكان لديها 12 طفلاً. لعبت هذه الأم دوراً مؤثراً في تربية وتعليم نابليون.
