اسم هذه الجبال يأتي من الكلمة اللاتينية التي تعني "الثور". تم العثور على معابد في جميع أنحاء هذه الجبال مزينة بتماثيل طينية للثيران. منذ العصور القديمة، عبد الناس الذين عاشوا هنا إله العواصف، وكانوا يعتقدون أنه يركب على ظهر ثور، ربما لأن صوت العواصف الرعدية كان يذكرهم بدقات حوافر الثيران.
