"العالم تحت السماء، بعد فترة طويلة من الانقسام يميل إلى الاتحاد، وبعد فترة طويلة من الاتحاد يميل إلى الانقسام." هذه كانت الحال منذ العصور القديمة. يأتي اسم الممالك الثلاث في الصين، والتي تعرف أيضاً في شكلها الأدبي بـ"رومانسية الممالك الثلاث"، من تقسيم الصين إلى ثلاث ممالك: **تساو وي**، و**شو هان، و وو. تمتد هذه الفترة في التاريخ الصيني على مدى 100 عام تقريباً، بدءاً من تفكك أسرة هان حتى تأسيس أسرة جين. تعتبر هذه الفترة واحدة من أكثر الفترات دموية في التاريخ الصيني؛ فبعد توحيد الصين بواسطة أسرة جين، أجري تعداد سكاني وتم تحديد أن عدد السكان المتبقي كان 16 مليون نسمة، بينما قبل انهيار أسرة هان، تم تسجيل 66 مليون نسمة.
