رواية تدور حول أمراض العصر عالميا، من خلال يوميات مدينة أمريكية صغيرة: فريلاند ( تشبه كثيرا مدينة هاريسون) تخترقها العداوة و العنصرية ضد كل ماهو مختلف، عربي و مسلم أو ملون.
فجأة يسري المدينة خبر مغرض، يقول إن مُرمِّمًا مسلما اسمه جلال، سيقوم بترميم كنيسة المدينة الكبيرة. كيف لمسلم أن يدخل إلى مدينة محصنة؟ لا يوجد بها أي مسجد أو كنيس يهودي؟
من هذه الفكرة_ الكذبة، يتسع سرد رواية سويت أميريكا التي بنيت على شخصية جيلْ ( جلال)، مختص في ترميم المعالم الدينية ( كنائس، مساجد، معابد بوذية، و يهودية و غيرها). يُدعى إلى فريلاند لترميم الكنيسة التي أهملت زمنا طويلا، منذ وفاة القس الذي كان يديرها.
لا شيء في فريلاند يوحي بأنها أرض الحرية. فهي ليست أكثر من مدينة عنصرية تتحكم فيها مجموعات التفوق العرقي التي وصل الأمر بها إلى اغتيال رئيس البلدية لأنه وقف ضد تجمع وايتسبيريت whitespirit العنصري، الذي جعل من مقهى Lightcafé مكان تجمعه و تنظيم هجومات العنصرية.
الرواية تتحدث عن فكرة تقبل الآخر و العيش مع بعض، كضرورة إنسانية للاستمرار، و ليست خيارا ثانويا تفرضه شرطيات الحاضر.
