تأتى أهمية هذه الدراسة التي تتناول الحافة الحضرية لمدينة تكاد تقع في وسط دلتا النيل، فهي تقع عند التقاء دائرة عرض 57َ 30° شمالا بخط طول 10َ 31° شرقاً(4)، حيث تلتقي عندها العديد من طرق النقل التي تربط بين جهات الدلتا (شكل 1) من جهة، كما لم تشكل خطوط السطح عائقا أمام امتداد العمران في كل الاتجاهات من جهة أخرى، إذ تقع المساحة التي تشغلها الكتلة العمرانية للمدينة مابين خطى كنتور 6.5 جنوبا، 5 شمالا، بفاصل رأسي بلغ 1.5 م، وذلك في مسافة تمتد لنحو5.3 كم. علاوة على ذلك كان هذا الموقع أحد الأسباب الرئيسية التي أدت إلى توطن صناعة الغزل والنسيج بها، وما لذلك من أثر حيث كانت الصناعة وما زالت بحق محرك النمو الأساسي لها.
