لقد لعبت صيدا أدواراً مهمة في أحداث الساحل الإسلامي طوال عصور الإسلام التاريخية تقريباً. فكانت ثغراً متقدماً للدفاع عن دار الإسلام، كما كانت ميناءً تجارياً مزدهراً، ومقراً لجند أو ولاية أو إقليلم لقرون طويلة. ولم يبدأ دورها السياسي والتجاري بالتراجع لصالح بيروت وبعض مدن الساحل الفلسطيني إلا في القرن التاسع عشر.
وتأتي دراسة غسان سنو في هذا الإطار لتغطي في تتبع دقيق المرحلة الانتقالية من الأهمية البارزة لمدينة إسلامية عريقة إلى حيّز التمدن الريفي المتوسط الدور والأهمية. وقد أمكن للمؤلف، الذي وضع هذا العمل في الأساس كأطروحة للماجيستير، أن يقوم بهذا التتبع الدقيق استناداً لوثائق المحكمة الشرعية بصيدا، التي استنطقها كلّ ما أمكنه عن المدينة من سائر النواحي.
والجديد في دراسة غسّان سنو هذه الدقة، وهذا الاستقصاء اللذان يميزان بحثه. فقد استخلص من الوثائق والعقود-وهي قليلة نسبياً-سوسيولوجية شبه كاملة للمدينة في النصف الأول من القرن التاسع عشر، والتزم أن تظلّ وثائق المحكمة الشرعية هي مصدره الوحيد في سائر أجزاء الدراسة.
