وقفت البوسنة والهرسك أمام وعي العالم منذ عام 1992 باعتبارها دولة تبحث عن استقلالها وحريتها بعد انهيار يوغسلافيا السابقة وانشطارها إلى مجموعة دول. وكان الشعب البوشناقي المسلم في طليعة هذه الوى المنافحة عن الاستقلال والحرية. وكان دائماً وجه "علي عزت بيجوفيتش" يطل من بين هذه الآلام ليقول سياسياً وثقافياً: "إن البوسنة لا بد أن تنال حريتها يوماً، وستعود كما كانت من قبل عنواناً للإخاء والترابط والتسامح بين الشعوب".
وكان علي عزت بيجوفيتش السياسي الإنسان والمثقف هو من عبر سابقاً ولاحقاً عن هذه الطموحات، ولذلك تعرض للسجن في عهد الرئيس تيتو. وكان عليه في السجن أن يعبر عن هذه الطموحات والآمال، ولكن بطريقة أخرى لا تدخل في عمق القضايا المطروحة، ولكنها تلامسها ملامسة مغايرة. حتى تكون عند اجتماعها بياناً عن تطلعات شعب البوشناق المسلم وشعوب البوسنة الأخرى. ويعتقد أن علي عزت بيجوفيتش نجح نجاحاً باهراً عندما حوّل قراءاته وتأملاته في السجن إلى لوحات ثقافية وحضارية تضاف إلى رصيده العام على صعيد السياسة والنضال والدفاع عن حقوق شعبه. وكان كتابه الجامع (هروبي إلى الحرية - أوراق السجن 1983-1988م) هو هذه الاعتقادات والطموحات عندما تتحدث عن مغازيها بطريق متباعدة، وعندما تجمع في أثنائها خلاصة الخلاصات، لكل ما يجب التفكير فيه، وأحياناً فكّ رموز اللامفكر به، أو المستحيل التفكير به.
