تأتي هذه الترجمة للكتاب "الهروب من الحرية" في زمن فاقت فيه إعداد المتحدثين عن الحرية والديمقراطية أعدادّهم في كل الأزمان الماضية.

وبما أن المنظور في كل المراكز الإعلامية، على فورة تعددّها، منظور أحادي قيمي، حتى عند الكثيرين من المنادين بالتعدّدية السياسية، وليس منظوراً يرى التشابكات السيكولوجية والإجتماعية والإقتصادية والثقافية، فإن كتاب "الهروب من الحرية" بتحليلاته وإستقصاءاته التي تقوم على إدراك التشابكات، يجيء في الوقت المناسب.
إن هذا الكتاب يقدم التمييز الهام بين جانبي الحرية، السلبي والإيجابي، إن مصطلح الحرية الذي تستخدمه اللغات والثقافات المختلفة، كثيراً ما يتجاهل الجانب الإيجابي للحرية، فيجري إستخدامه بأحد معنيي التحرر، أو الحرية السلبية، أي التحرر من العوائق الخارجية، ولكن كثيراً ما تكون الزواجر الداخلية أقوى بكثير من الضغوط الخارجية الفعلية.
