"أعيتها رحلة البحث عن الحرية وسط تقاليد صارمة نصبت كتمثال الحرية منذ عشرات السنين، حاربت الشمس ووقفت ضد شروقها حاولت إخراس أمواج البحر وأن يضلّ الليل طريقه إلى دروب المدينة... أصمّت أذنيها عن سماع تغريد الطيور ودوران الطبيعة من حولها، وجلها تنادي بإحناء الهامات لتهدأ العاصفة... والعاصفة لا تهدأ أبداً، بل تمور وتمور لتبعثر الآمال وتنثر السحب خيوطاً في الرمال فتحلق الحرية بعيداً كطير يطير بنصف جناح".
من عمق المجتمع السلطوي القاسي، تنطلق نداءات استغاثات وإنذارات بأن الظلم دمار، وانسحاق، وقماشة عبد الرحمن العليان تدخل عالم الظلم السلطوي لتعكس أبعاده، فترى كقارئ "بأم القلب" لا بأم العين عالماً مخيفاً يتحرك ناسه وفق قوانين سلطوية تحوّل الحياة سجناً وقضباناً... وخنوعاً واستسلاماً.
وعالم قماشة العليان عالم الإنسان، ذكراً وأنثى، الرجل فيه (الأب، الزوج)، عاتٍ ممعن في غيّه، يفرض قانون، وما على الآخرين إلا الطاعة وتنفيذ الأوامر، وما تدفعه المرأة ثمناً لأنوثتها قد يتجاوز طاقتها على الاحتمال... ولا يبقى أمامها إلا حلول بائسة لا تشفي غليلاً ولا تحقق حلماً...
فهي ترضخ مرغمة، أو تنتحر، أو تلجأ إلى الانتقام... وأحلام، بطلة الرواية، هي من لجأت إلى الانتقام من شاريها السبعيني العاجز إلا عن ممارسة قسوته، انتقمت! لكن ضربة العصا لم تخرجها إلى الفردوس بل أخرجتها من سجن بلا قضبان إلى سجن حبكت قضبانه بدقة.
وهذه القصة حائزة على جائزة المبدعات العربيات في الشارقة لسنة 2000.
