تتناول الرواية قصة حياة البطلة "ريتا" التى تصارع الحياة من أجل إنقاذ نفسها من الوقوع فى براثن الشر، وهى تراه متجسدًا في شخصيات كثيرة أحاطتها، وهى تحاول أن تلف حول عنقها خيوطا تشبه خيوط أنثى العنكبوت السامة فتهرب من رؤيته فى بيتها وسط صراعات ممتدة بين الطفلة المتمردة الممثلة فى شخصها، وبين أمها "زهوة" التى تحاول دائما استعادتها من رحلتها الخطرة فى أجواء عملها بالصحافة، وعبر فصول الرواية تمارس البطلة التهكم من شخصية رئيس التحرير الذى يدعى الثورة وعلى الجانب الآخر يجهض حقوق شباب الصحفيين مما يشكل لها ولأصدقائها عالما ممذوجا بالخيبة الشخصية تمتزج مع الخيبة السياسية فى عهد مبارك، فتقوم الثورة وتتبخر أحلامها مع الثوار بتولى المجلس العسكرى حكم البلاد، وعبر فصول عديدة بالرواية تحاول البطلة القفز على كل الخيبات التى تواجهها والتى تختتمها بفقدان إبنها نتيجه الإجهاض لتغلق كل صفحات الماضى المؤلمة،وتعود إلى غرفتها التى تسميها غرفة الهجر لتحتضن كل ذكرياتها وتبدأ فى الكتابة لتحتمى بها كمصدر للآمان.
