شكل كتاب "اللغز الأنثوي" لبيتي فريدان علامةً فارقة في أدبيات الحركة النسوية العالمية، وقد جاءت الفكرة الأولى للكتاب من إستبيان أجرته الكاتبة على زميلاتها في الدراسة بهدف معرفة مصيرهن بعد الدراسة، وقادها هذا الإستبيان إلى بحث دام خمس سنوات، اكتشفت من خلاله سر مأساة المرأة في الولايات المتحدة الأمريكية.
فبعد النهضة النسوية التي شهدتها أمريكا، بداية القرن العشرين، بتأثير الحركات النسوية النشيطة، حصلت إنتكاسة في المجتمع الأمريكي، وبدأت الحضارة الأمريكية تنحو نحو رسم صورة مشوهة للمرأة الأمريكية، صورة امرأة تقنع نفسها أن تحقيق ذاتها يتم من خلال تحولها إلى ربة منزل ناجحة، تعتني بزوج ناجح وبيت مرت أنيق وأولاد مميزين، قادت تلك الصورة إلى تحول الأمريكيات إلى ذوات ناقصة، يعانين من علل نفسية لم يستطع الأطباء النفسيين تشخيصها وعلاجها، وذلك ما أطلقت عليه بيتي فريدان اسم اللغز الأنثوي، وتصف بيتي فريدان كتابها بالقول: "لكن هذا لم يكن مجرّد عمل تجريدي وخيالي، كان يعني أنني، وكل امرأة أخرى عرفتها، كنا نعيش كذبة، وكان كل الأطباء الذين عالجونا والخبراء الذين درسونا يرتكبون الكذبة ذاتها، وقد بنيت منازلنا ومدارسنا وكنائسنا وسياستنا ومهننا حول تلك الكذبة، لو كانت النساء أشخاصاً فعلاً، لا أكثر ولا أقل، لكان يجب أن يتغير كل ما منعهن من أن يكُنّ أشخاصاً كاملين في مجتمعنا.
والنساء، عندما يخترقن اللغز الأنثوي ويأخذن أنفسهن بجدية كأشخاص، سيرين مكانتهن قائمة على قاعدة زائفة، حتى تمجيدهن بوصفهن مواضيع جنسية، نتيجة ما كان يمثله من إنتقاص".
