من هنا اشتبكَت أسئلة الرواية والتاريخ والمكان والعالم -الذي تشتغل عليه- مع أسئلة الذات عن دلالة كلمات أخرى تظلِّل تلك المساحة؛ كمعنى الشرف، ونقاء النَّسَب، وتقديس كبار السِّنِّ والأولياء والصالحين والقوى الرُّوحيَّة، هل كانت الصحراء هي التي تخلق مدنها السرابية، وجنَّاتها المختبئة، وتفرض أضحياتها البشرية؟ أم كان التيه الذي يتهدَّد القبيلة هو الذي أفرخ كلَّ هذه المخاوف؟ أم كان مناخ النُّدرة هو الذي لوى الأعناق باتجاه سحابة طائرة قد لا تَحطُّ على الوديان العطشى؛ هو الذي دفع لكل هذا الهلع من عقاب سماويٍّ يحلُّ على الذين يجرؤون على مُساءلة القدر؟ إن تكوين العقل الرَّعوي يَرْتَكِنُ اجتماعيًّا وروحيًّا وسلطويًّا وأسطوريًّا على تصوُّره للمُقدَّس، وعلاقته به.
