لقد كثر الحديث في الأوساط الثقافية والسياسية العربية حالياً عن الحداثة والتحديث، وتجاوز صيت الكلام المجال الأدبي والفكري إلى المجال السياسي ومن ثم إلى مجال التربية.
وكثافة تداول الإصطلاح تؤدي أحياناً إلى عكس المتوقع، أي أنها لا تؤدي إلى وضوح المفهوم ومعرفة مدلوله بفعل كثرة إستعماله وتداوله، بل تؤدي إلى إختلال دلالته، وإلتباسها عند المتحدثين به والمستمعين إليه على حد سواء.
وذلك راجع أولاً إلى أن الأمر في مثل هذه الإصطلاحات المتداولة في المجالات المعرفية والسياسية والتربوية لا يرجع إلى مطلب المعرفة والوضوح المفاهيمي حتى يتوسل إليه بالنقاش الفكري القائم على الحوار، بل يرجع إلى إعتبارات سياسية وإيديولوجية، ولذا من الطبيعي أن يستعاض عن الحوار المعرفي بالمزايدات والحسابات السياسية.
فالحداثة تعني حالةٌ انطلقت من فكرة أن الإنسان هو مركز الكون وسيده، وأنه لا يحتاج إلا إلى عقله فقط، في فهم الحياة، ودراسة الواقع، وإدارة المجتمع، والتمييز بين النافع والضار، دون الرجوع إلى وحي أو غيب.
وقد تسلل إلى معجمنا الثقافي كثيرٌ من المصطلحات الفلسفية التي أنتجتها العقلية الأوروبية، والتي كان لها الأثر الكبير في تشكِّل الثقافة العربية المعاصرة، وفي بناء المفاهيم المعرفية في خطابنا التعليمي، متمظهراً في العلوم الإنسانية بأقسامها المتنوعة: اللغة، والأدب، والفن، والتاريخ، وعلم النفس، والإجتماع، والسياسة، إضافةً إلى الدين والفلسفة.
