يتمثل جزء من قوة ما بعد الحداثية في واقعة أنها موجودة، في حين أن وجود الاشتراكية هذه الأيام هو موضع جدل، حيث يبدو في الوقت الراهن أن ما هو واقعي ليس عقلانياً، وما هو عقلاني ليس واقعياً. ومع ذلك فقد انطلق تيري ايفلتون في حكمه على ما بعد الحداثية من منظور اشتراكي واسع، الأمر الذي ينبغي ألا يؤخذ كإشارة إلى أن الاشتراكية لا مشاكل لديها، وهنا يقول تيري أنه على العكس من ذلك، ربما لمن تكن الاشتراكية في أية مرحلة من مراحل مسيرتها الصاخبة المضطربة فكرة حلّ بها البلاد وفكرة افتراضية بالقدر الذي هي عليه في هذه الأيام، ويضيف بأنه من الخداع الفكري أن تزعم اليوم أن الماركسية لا تزال واقعاً سياسياً حياً أو أن منظورات التغيير الاشتراكي وآفاقه، في اللحظة الراهنة على الأقل، ليست بعيدة كل البعد.
غير أن الأسوأ من هذا الخداع بكثير هو التخلي في مثل هذه الظروف عن الحلم بمجتمع عادل، وبذا نذعن للفوضى المرعبة التي هي العالم المعاصر وهكذا فإن تيري لا يزعم أن ثمة بديلاً لما بعد الحداثية ناضجاً بين يديه، بل هو يقول بأنه من المقدور الإتيان بما هو أفضل من ما بعد الحداثية، وهو طرح لا تقتضي الموافقة عليه أن يكون المرء اشتراكياً مقتنعاً، أو ماركسياً مكرساً. لقد حاول تيري انتقاد ما بعد الحداثية من منظور سياسي ونظري، وليس بأسلوب ردّ الفعل المبتذل القائم على الفهم الشائع.
يجلو تيري ايغلتون في هذا الكتاب الروح اللعوب الشعبوية لما بعد الحداثة، وتقليدها الشكل السلعي للسوق، والمجتمع القائم على قصة الاعتماد المصرفي الملفقة وإطلاقها العنان لقوة المحلي ومجانسته كونياً في آن، كذلك إقلاقها ليقينات الأوتوقراطي، وارتيابها حيال القانون وإيمانها بالأسلوب واللذة، وعمرانها بالوصفات الأخلاقية الكونية، مقابل شجبها الكونية كأثر تنويري، ونكرانها إمكانية وصف العالم، كما تفعل اللاواقعية الأبستمولوجية.
