«ليسَ ثمَّةَ سِتارٌ حَدِيديٌّ أو سُورٌ كَسُورِ الصِّينِ يَفصِلُ بَينَ الحَداثةِ ومَا بَعدَ الحَداثة؛ فالتَّارِيخُ يَتضمَّنُ طَبقاتٍ مُتعدِّدةً مِنَ المَعانِي والتَّفاصِيل، والثَّقافةُ تَخترقُ المَاضيَ والحَاضرَ والمُستَقبَل.»
على الرَّغمِ مِنَ ارْتباطِ مُصطلَحِ «مَا بعدَ الحداثةِ» فِي أوَّلِ ظُهورِه بِالعِمارةِ والهَندَسةِ فَإنَّه سُرعانَ ما انتَقلَ إلى الفَلسَفةِ والفَنِّ والأَدبِ والاجْتِماعِ والأَنثرُوبولُوجيا والاقْتِصادِ والسِّياسةِ وغَيرِها مِن شتَّى فُروعِ المَعْرفة، وكَانَ لِذلكَ كُلِّه إرهَاصاتٌ أَحدَثتْ تَحوُّلاتٍ اجْتِماعيةً هَائِلةً مهَّدَتْ لِظُهورِ إِطارٍ فِكريٍّ مُختلِفٍ مُخالِفٍ لِما كَانَ سَائدًا فِي المَاضِي، ويَعرِضُ الكِتابُ للنَّظرِياتِ التَّأسِيسيَّةِ لهَذا المُصطلَحِ الشَّائِك؛ فِي مُحاولةٍ لِفهْمِه ووَضْعِه فِي سِياقِه التَّارِيخِيِّ عَبْرَ مُنَظِّريهِ الذِينَ كَانتْ لَهمُ اليَدُ العُليَا فِي تَشكِيلِ وَعيٍ مَا بَعدَ حَداثِي، مُستنِدًا فِي ذلِكَ كُلِّه عَلى أَفكارِ المُفكِّر المِصرِيِّ «إيهاب حسن» التي عَرضَها فِي مَقالِهِ الشَّهيرِ «سؤالُ ما بعدَ الحَداثة».
