أما فصل الهوية والحرية فيضيء لنا حركة الحداثة عامة، وشعر أدونيس خاصة، ولعله ضروري لاستيعاب التحولات الفكرية التي بدأت في عصر النهضة، وما تلاها من إشعاعات. ولعلّه بمنزلة التمهيد وليس فصلاً بذاته يحتاج إلى دراسة أكثر وأعمق ...
في ختام الدراسة يستنتج المؤلف الرؤيا الأدونيسية للمدن العربية فيراها تنطلق من رفض الهوية الجاهزة التي تولّد العنف والكراهية. ذلك أن شعر أدونيس هو دعوة إلى الديمقراطية في أجلى مظاهرها حرية الرأي .. حرية الممارسة السياسية، حرية الحب والجنس، حرية البحث عن المجهول مهما كانت النتائج. لذلك يصطدم بالمدن العربية التي لا تشبع من الدم. ولا تكل عن سحق المعارضين، معتمدة على مطلق يتعالى على التجربة. إنها مدين كثيرة بهوية واحدة تقاوم منطق الزمن، وترتمي في حضن الثبات ..
القراءات التي يشملها هذا الكتاب هي: 1- الهوية والحرية، 2- مدينة القاهرة في "أحلم وأطيع آية الشمس" ، 3- مدينة البتراء في "يد الحجر ترسم المكان" ، 4- بيروت في قصائد ثلاث: الوقت (كتاب الحصار) ، فاصل من الغبار والورق، الهواء هو نفسه الأنين" 4- بنت جبيل في "نرد أحمر" ، 5- طنجة في قصيدة "لوّن، أيها الدم، هذه اللوحة التي نسميها الأرض" ، 6- دمشق في "المسرح والمرايا" ، و"كتاب القصائد الخمس" ، 7- العروبة الجديدة في قصيدة "إسماعيل". وأخيراً خاتمة الدراسة.
