يأتي هذا الكتاب حصيلة سنوات من الجهد والتأمّل، وتتمة لمؤلفات سابقة تناولت قضايا الشعر الحديث. وما من ريب أن هناك دوافع عديدة لتأليفه عير أن الدافع الرئيسي تمثّل في حاجة طلابنا الجامعيين إلى نصوص محلّلة تمكّنهم من تذوق قصيدة مستقلّة، وتساعدهم على تدارسها بلغة نقدية حديثة.
فلقد كثرت الدراسات المتعلقة بالحداثة الشعرية، وهي من أجمل ما أبدعه العرب، ولكن معظمها تطرق مسائل عامة اقترنت ببعض الشواهد العابرة، ولكن معظمها تطرق إلى مسائل عامة اقترفت ببعض الشواهد العابرة، ولم تعمد إلى نصّ مستقلّ، له خصوصيته الفنيّة والفكريّة ينبغي الكشف عنها في غمرة التحليل والمقارنة. من هنا جاء هذا الكتاب ليسدّ نقصاً، كما نرى، ثم ليفجّر طاقات خبيئة عند الطالب والمتذوق على السواء.
وقد رأينا لزاماً علينا الإلمام، أولاً، بمقدمات نظرية قد تمهّد بعض السبيل، وتضيء معالم النصوص الأدبية. ولم نشأ الإغراق في التجريد، فانتقلنا، ثانياً، إلى الأمثلة المحسوسة، بصفتها لغة الحياة، وشرعنا في معالجتها.
وهذا الكتاب ليس وفقاً على الشابات والشبان إذ يستطيع كل ناقد، وكل متذوّق، الإقبال عليه لوعي متجدّد، وربما بوعي معارض.
