بين دفتي هذا الكتاب الحكايا الشعبية الدمشقية التي كانت دائرةً على ألسنة النَّاس حتى أربعينيَّات القرن العشرين، وقد قيِّدها المؤلّف مشافهةً من أفواه نسوة عتاقٍ معمّرات من طبقة جداته ممِّن كُنّ مستودعاً للرّواية.
جعل المصنّف بين يدي هذه الحكايا مقدّمةً ضافيةً في الأدب الشعبي وحقوله ومضامينه وأغراضه وأبعاده وما يُمثله في ذاكرة الشعوب.
وأظهر أنَّ هذه الحكايات مِمَّا أبدعه العقل الجمعيّ الوجدانيّ للأمّة، ولهذا ينبغي توثيقها وصونها وحمايتها ودراستها للكشف عمّا انطوت عليه من بدائع وروائع وأسرار.
