كانت مسرحيات خيال الظل أشبه بمرآة يرى فيما الناس عيوبهم ونقائصهم وتطلعاتهم ومواقفهم من الأحداث، أي واقعهم المعاش وما ينبغي أن تكون عليه حياتهم.
ولإحياء هذا التراث الشعبي الهام عمد المؤلف إلى جمع مواده من أفواه الكركوزاتية، وكان يدون ما يسمع، وكان يرتحل في سبيل الحصول على ضآلته، لذلك جاءت المعلومات ميدانية موثقة منسوبة، مما يجعل لمعجمه قيمة تاريخية وتأريخية في آن.
