عرّف الفلاسفة الإنسان بأنه "كائن ناطق" أي عاقل قادر على إدراك العالم من حوله، فلا شك، كذلك، أنه "كائن أسطوري" بمعنى أنه الكائن الوحيد الذي ينسج الخرافات والأساطير ويحولها، عبر الخيال، إلى حكايات يؤمن بها إيماناً جازماً كما لو كانت حقائق واقعة لا ريب فيها.
وبينما يلجأ الإنسان في الأزمان الغابرة إلى "الأسطورة" وما تتضمنه من قصص خيالية حتى يفسر، من خلالها، ظواهر الكون الطبيعية وغيرها من الظواهر، التي لم يكن بمقدوره أن يستنبط قوانينها العلمية ويسخرها لصالحه؛ فما زال الإنسان المعاصر يحرص على إستهلاك وإنتاج "الأسطورة" التي تسهم في تحقيق قدر من الإتزان في علاقته بذاته وفي علاقته بأفراد المجتمع.
ومن هنا، رأى البعض ضرورة تفسير "الأسطورة" ضمن إطار البناء الإجتماعي والثقافي السائد في المجتمع، فإذا كانت "الأسطورة" تطرح مشكلتها طرحاً مباشراً، أي بإستخدام الألفاط التي يستخدمها المجتمع الذي نشأت فيه، فإن مضمونها يظهر من خلال المجتمع ذاته؛ وهي أحياناً تطرح المشكلة من خلال المجتمع ذاته، وهي أحياناً تطرح المشكلة طرحاً مقلوباً، وتسعى إلى حلها بالخلف.
وفي هذه الحالة يقدم مضمون "الأسطورة" صورة عكسية للواقع الإجتماعي بصبغته الواقعية المعطاة وعلى نحو ما هو ماثل في الوعي، وعلى هذا الأساس، تظهر "الأسطورة" بوصفها "إيديولوجيا" وتطرح تساؤلات معرفية حول كثير من القضايا الإجتماعية والفكرية.
