"مُعجم شَعَرَاء البصرة" في جزئيه الأول والثاني جمع فيه مؤلفه الأستاذ الدكتور عبد الباسط خليل الدرويش أكثر من (400) شاعراً بصرياً ونماذج شعره، فأحصى شعراء البصرة، وحاول أن لا يغفل أحداً منهم، ولم يترك شاردة ولا واردة في تاريخ البصرة إلا أحصاها، فكان مؤرخاً وأدبياً في نفس الوقت.
ولأن القلم يعجز أن يدوّن شعر مدينة بكل ما فيها من وصف ومدح ورثاء وهجاء وغزل وشعر حكمة أو غيرها، يذكر المؤلف في مقدمة هذا العمل بكتابه الموسوم "إتحاف الأسرة بمعرفة تأريخ البصرة" وهو الكتاب الذي استقى منه أجزاء هذا المعجم وزاد عليها الكثير، ليطبع بمفرده، وليرى النور بعد نشره، وذلك لعظم حجم كتاب الإتحاف كما يشير إلى ذلك المؤلف، وكان منهجه في "معجم شعراء البصرة" أن يذكر كل من دخل البصرة وسكنها وإن كان قد رحل عنها بعد ذلك، أو جاءها والياً أو قاضياً أو غيره.
كما رتب أسماء الشعراء على الحروف الهجائية من الألف إلى الياء، ويذكر تحت كل ترجمة ما ورد عنها في كتب التراجم والتاريخ والرجال والحديث والأدب واللغة، كما يذكر أيضاً تحت كل ترجمة بعض حديث الشاعر إن وجد بعد ذكر طرف من حياته ونماذج من شعره، ثم يذكر الشاعرات على الحروف الهجائية أيضاً إذ بلغن (28) شاعرة من شواعر البصرة بينما كان عدد الشعراء الرجال أكثر من (400) شاعراً.
من الشعراء الذين يشتمل عليهم هذا المعجم نذكر: أبان بن عبد الحميد بن لاحق بن عفير اللاحقي، إبراهيم بن مالك الأسدي، إبراهيم محمد حرج الوائلي، إبراهيم يعقوب عوبديا، أحمد بن إسحاق الخاركي، أحمد جاسم محمد، أحمد العاشور... وآخرون.
