البصرة أحد الأمصار العربية التي أسست بدخول الإسلام العراق وقد بنيت قرب (الأبلة) عندما أرسل الخليفة عمر بن الخطاب عتبة بن غزوان سنة 14هـ على رأس قوة صغيرة، بالقياس إلى حجم الجيوش العربية.
اتخذت (الخريبة) قاعدة لحركتها، وكانت قاعدة هذه القوة أول معسكر للمسلمين في غرب الأبلة؛ وقد بنيت هذه القاعدة في الخريبة في البداية من أدوات البناء المتوفرة التي تتخذ للإقامة المؤقتة كالقصب والخيام.
ثم أسس عتبة بن غزوان المسجد الجامع ودار الإمارة وثبت الخطط والشوارع والدروب، وبذلك أصبحت مصراً ثابتاً على يد هذا القائد، وقد ولي المغيرة بن شعبة بعد وفاة عتبة بن غزوان ففتح الكور الواقعة على الضفة الشرقية من شط العرب، ولما جاء أبو موسى الأشعري والياً عليها بعد المغيرة وسع رقعة الفتوح إلى الأهواز وأصفهان، وقد تمّ هذا التوسع بفضل إزدياد عدد المقاتلين المسلمين الذين صارت قاعدتهم في البصرة مدينة مستقرة المعالم.
ثم تقاطر إليها الناس، فنمت فيها الحياة الإقتصادية والفكرية، وقد برز اسم البصرة في الحوادث السياسية وبخاصة زمن الثورات والمحن التي ابتلي بها المسلمون وغدت ذات أهمية سوقية كبيرة ومركزاً حضارياً عظيماً لغناها وأهميتها وموقعها الجغرافي.
