عني ماسينيون بالحواجز العراقية الكوفة والبصرة وبغداد، وكان لإقامته في العراق تأثير كبير في اتجاهه الصوفي، كما دفعه ذلك إلى أن يعنى بالحواضر العراقية الكوفة والبصرة وبغداد، وتمثل هذه الدراسة التي بدأ بها سنة 1935 القسم الثالث من تنقيباته عن وضع السكان المدنيين من مدن العراق منذ الفتح الإسلامي، ولم يستطع إلا أن يعطي فيها ملاحظات عامة في مجال أصحاب الحرف في المدائن. وقد قسم المؤلف موضوعات دراسته إلى قسمين عالج في القسم الأول خطط البصرة من حيث الطريقة المتبعة لإعادة بناء مخطط، واضعاً جدول يشتمل على المواقع الخمسة للقبائل، شارحاً نظام الحركة الداخلية في البصرة، وامتداد البنى الثقافية البصرية في الأقاليم التابعة لها، أما القسم الثاني فقد خصصه المؤلف للحديث من خطط بغداد في القرون الوسطى، من خلال الوقفيات والنص المكتوب العظيم في جامع مرجان والحجج الملكية لأملاك الضفة اليمن في بغداد، والقبور الأولى والسير الأولى للأولياء المعترف بولايتهم، كما تحدث فيه عن الغزالي وابن الجوزي وكذلك عن قائمة من الأولياء، هذا وقد تضمن البحث العديد من الملحقات الإيضاحية والمخططات البيانية التي تحدد موقع البصرتين.
