لقد جاءت فكرة تأليف هذا الكتاب عندما كنت أقوم بتدريس علم النفس التربوي لأقسام مختلفة في كلية التربية ، ابن رشد، جامعة بغداد. وقمت بالتعاون مع زملاء آخرين بتأليف كتاب منهجي يدرس كل مستوى الدراسات الأولية في قسم العلوم التربوية والنفسية والأقسام الأخرى في الكلية وذلك عام 1998.
وبعدها قمت بتدريس علم النفس التربوي في الماجستير والدكتوراه، مما حدا بي أن أقدم هذا الجهد الجديد ليفيد طلبة الدراسات الأولية والعليا، ويفيد القاريء كأساسيات لعلم النفس التربوي ونظريات التعلم تحديداً، ونظريات الدافعية.
وقد وجدت لزاماً علي أن أخصص فصلاً للإرشاد التربوي النفسي علاقته بعلم النفس التربوي، وأخذت نموذج لدراسة الحالة التي يستفيد منها المدرس والطالب والمستعين أو المسترشد.
وقد تضمن الكتاب عدة فصول توزعت وفق ما يلي: الفصل الأول: "حاجة الإنسان إلى التعلم"، الفصل الثاني: "النمو الإنفعالي"، الفصل الثالث: "مناهج دراسة النمو"، الفصل الرابع: "سيكولوجية التعلم ونظرياته"، الفصل الخامس: "التذكر والنسيان"، الفصل السادس: "الإرشاد النفسي التربوي جزء من علم النفس التربوي"...
