المنهج الأسطوري في تفسير الشعر القديم محاولة لإيجاد منهج نقدي من هذا النوع يستمد أصوله من ضروب العلم المختلفة ليكون أكثر فهماً للأدب وأكثر قدرة على تفسيره.
وهذا المنهج يمثل رؤية جديدة وجزئية للتراث الشعري القديم، تستمد جدتها وجرأتها من مخالفتها لما استكانت إليه الدراسات السابقة، حيث يكشف المنهج عن ارتباط الشعر الجاهلي الوثيق بالفكر الميثوديني، وهو جانب ظل مجهولاً طيلة القرون السابقة من حياة هذا التراث الشعري.
ولقد تزايدت الدراسات التي سارت في هذا الاتجاه في النصف الأخير من هذا القرن متأثرة بنتائج الدراسات العلمية الحديثة من ناحية، ومتأثرة بتطبيق هذا المنهج على الفن القديم في الغرب من ناحية أخرى. غير أن "المنهج الأسطوري" لم يكن قبل اليوم موضوعاً مستقلاً لدراسة أكاديمية تعرض لمفاهيمه وأصوله، وتتناول مراحل تطوره، وتضعه بين مناهج النقد الأخرى دراسة ونقداً وتقييماً، فجاءت هذه الدراسة لتعمد إلى بيان أصوله العامة ومفاهيمه الأساسية التي قام عليها من العلوم الإنسانية الأخرى، ولتعنى بالتأريخ للمنهج وبيان وخطوات نموه ومراحله من مرحلة في موقعه بين المناهج الأخرى التي تناولت شعر ما قبل الإسلام.
