الإنسان هو الكائن الوحيد المقدس في الكون، كما أنّ الناس كائنات طقوسية بكلّ إمتياز ولا يمكنهم العيش معاً إلاّ بواسطة طقوس تنظم مبادلاتهم الرمزية المختلفة.
فالمجتمع مسرح يومي تُؤدّى فيه الأدوار منظمة وفق طقوس تفاعلية، لا تستوي الحياة الجماعية بدونها، وعندما شرع الإنسان يبحث في كينونته وذاته ليحدد هويته سقط في دوامة الثنائيات الساذجة اللامتناهية، فالإنسان جسد وروح، الإنسان عقل وشهوة، الإنسان مادة ووعي، تلك هي بعض الثنائيات المقترحة التي انطلق منها الإنسان لإدراك نفسه ووعي ذاته، ولأنه كذلك فقد اهتم الإنسان بموضوع الدين، وأخذ هذا الدين يتطور ويسلك فيه الإنسان طرائق متعددة وأصبح الدين يتمثل في حياة الإنسان في أربعة أوجه هي: الطقوس والعاطفة والإيمان والإدراك العقلي.
وهذا الكتاب يحاول أن يشرح هذه المفاهيم بصورة تحليلية فهو مدخل: في تحديد مفهوم الدين كان مفيداً في كثير من الحالات لتجنب مشكلة تقدير الإعتقاد أهوَ حقيقي واقعي أم أنه ملازم للتدين، وعوداً على بدء فإن الدين ظهر من خلال الأساطير نظراً لكون الأساطير تخدم أغراضاً مختلفة كثيرة، وكان الغرض الأول تفسير ما هو غير قابل للتفسير، فمنذ بداية وجود الجنس البشري، عملت الأساطير لتكون تبريرات لغوامض الحياة الأساسية، أسئلة من قبيل: من صنع العالم؟ كيف سينتهي؟ من أين جئنا؟ من كان أول إنسان؟ ما الذي يحدث حين نموت؟ لماذا تنتقل الشمس عبر السماء كل يوم؟ لماذا يكبر القمر ويتضاءل؟ لماذا لدينا دورات زراعية سنوية وتغيرات موسمية؟ من يتحكم بعالمنا؟ وكيف نستطيع التأثير في تلك الكائنات بحيث تكون حيواتنا أسهل؟...
