يعد الشعر المسرحي واحداً من الأنماط الشعرية حديثة العهد في الوطن العربي، إذ نشأ في الأدب الحديث نتيجة التثاقف والإمتزاج الحضاري والتأثر بالآداب الأوروبية وإن كانت له جذور في الحضارة العربية تقترب منه شيئاً ما مثل خيال الظل، ومما لا شك فيه أن معد الجبوري واحد من أعمدة الشعر المسرحي العراقي، بل العربي المعاصر، إذ مثلت مسرحياته الشعرية مرات عدة وترجمت إلى لغات مختلفة وأدخلت في المناهج الدراسية، ولذلك سعينا لدراسة مسرحياته الشعرية إستكمالاً لدراسات سابقة لنا ولغيرنا عن شعره غير المسرحي.
ولما كانت مقاربتنا تتناول (تجليات الأسطوري والتاريخي للشخصية في شعر معد الجبوري المسرحي).
فقد تناولت بالدراسة مسرحياته الشعرية الأربعة (آداباً، شموكين، الشرارة، السيف والطبل) متتبعة شخصيات تلك المسرحيات وما تمتلكه من مرجعيات أسطورية وتاريخية إذا استثمر الجبوري الحضور الأسطوري والتاريخي لشخصيات شعره المسرحي وقيمته الإجتماعية والفكرية والحضارية التي تصل إلى حد القداسة أحياناً محاولاً معالجة تلك الموضوعات بإطار معاصر يحاول الإفادة من المرجعيات دون أن يتقيد بها تماماً ويخضع لإطارها الموروث.
