هذا الكتاب هو مجموعة أبحاث تندرج بشكل مباشر أو غير مباشر في إطار الحراك الديموغرافي للطوائف اللبنانية خلال القرون الوسطى. أي منذ العصر المملوكي في أوائل القرن الرابع عشر للميلاد وحتى أواخر القرن الثامن عشر. وهذا الحراك يتعلق بالموازنة والدروز والشيعة والنصيرية والروم الملكيين، وغيرهم، ممن ذكر عرضاً في سياق الحراك القسري أو التلقائي لهذه الطوائف، ويشمل عدة مناطق جغرافية في كسروان العصر المملوكي وما بعده، وبلاد المتن والشوف وجزين وإقليم التفاح وغيرها خلال عهد الإمارتين المعنية والشهابية.
والمؤلف لا يدعي البتَة القيام برصد شامل لحراك هذه الطوائف خلال خمسة قرون من تاريخ لبنان. فهذه المهمة تخرج عن قدرات فرد معيَن مهما امتلك من إمكانيات فكرية ومنهجية ووئائقية، بل هي في الواقع ثمرة عمل أكاديمي دؤوب لعدد من الباحثين، سواء كانت أبحاثهم في سياق متَصل أو منفصل.
