بإختصار، يمكن تحقيق هذا الهدف الرئيسي الهام بأتباع أربعة طرق مختلفة هي: أولاً: وصف حالة السكان الراهنة وفي الماضي، ثانياً: دراسة العلاقة بين السكان والنظام الإجتماعي، ثالثاً: جمع وصياغة تعميمات ومبادئ انبثقت، وما زالت تظهر عن طريق الأبحاث الديمغرافية وعرضها على صورة فرضيات أو نظريات، ورابعاً: معرفة إتجاهات السكان في المستقبل وما يترتب على ذلك من نتائج.
