يقدم الباحث عبد الأمير الأعسم الإمام الغزالي من دراسة خرجت عن المألوف في تناوله كمفكر وفيلسوف وفقيه ومتكلم ومتصوف. يقدمه في هذه الدراسة بشكل شيق ومبتكر على ضوء التدقيق فيما عبره غيره في الكشف عن جذور تصوفه، وتأثير ذلك في منجاه الروح العام. فقد كان مع الغزالي صريحاً صراحته مع نفسه حيث أنه لو قدر له أن يبعث ليكتب عن أزمته الروحية كتاباً كهذا الذي بين أيدينا. لقد كشف المؤلف للباحثين لأول مرة عالم يعرفه أو تجاهله غيره وذلك من خلال هذه الدراسة التي كانت بمثابة إعادة تقويم لمنحى تطور الإمام الغزالي الروحي. وجاءت الدراسة بسيطة في منهجها، ولكنها معقدة في مصادرها ومراجعها، لذا فهي تصلح أن تكون دليلاً لقارئي الغزالي بشكل عام.
