منذ أن عرفت هذا الكتاب قبل ما يزيد على عشرين سنة فقد قرأته أكثر من ثلاث مرات ولا أدري كم مرة قرأت الفصل الخاص بالرباعيات الوترية الأخيرة. أقول قرأته ولكن قراءة كتاب حول بيتهوفن، مهما يكن متوغلاً في أسرار هذا الكائن الذي سمع كلّ شيء سوى أصوات العالم الضاجّة، من غير ملاحقة موسيقى بيتهوفن في أروقة الروح ومتاهاتها، من غير استماعٍ متواصل متكرر معاند عناد حياة لكل جملة موسيقية كتبها, هذا الذي لم يتوقف عن المجي إلينا من غير عناء انتظار والذي ننتظره أحياناً وهو بيننا كالأوكسجين الذي لا نراه، هذه القراءة لا تغني كما لا يغني الحديث بشأن السباحة عن السباحة، ولا وصف اللون يحلّ محل إبصاره. فلنذهب إلى بيتهوفن إذاً ولنسمع منه قبل أن نسمع من غيره عنه, فإذا تحققت هذه الريادة الواجبة يصير الحديث عنه حديثاً عن زيارة اكتسبنا من ورائها صديقاً حميماً ليس هو ذلك الوجه المتجهم الذي يطالعنا من صوره، ولا هو ذلك المشاكس المستوحد الذي كان الناس ينفرون منه أحياناً لشدة نفرته من الناس، بل الرفيق العلوي النقي الصادق الفرح المبتهج المتواصل الحنون, والآسر كريم اليد والروح، الحزين حزناً كونياً على أنه فرديّ نابع منه. ذلك هو بيتهوفن في موسيقاه: قوة من غير عجرفة ولطافة، من غير ميوعة وشعاع مسموع. وإنّ أكثر ما كتبه إعادة لتنظيم المشاعر عن طريق تجربة روحية لم يحدث لها نظير في تاريخ الفن على الإطلاق كما يؤكد ذلك غير واحد من الذين لفحتهم شمس موسيقاه.
