عندما وصف ابن شاكر الكتبي نصر الدين بأنه "فيلسوف" فإنه إنما كان يشير إلى شهرته التي عرف بها بعد وفاته، وفي رأينا، أن الصفة العلمية هي التي كانت غالبة عليه في حياته، لان كتبه الفلسفية انتشرت بعيداً بين الناس بعد وفاته، وبالضبط بعد أن حلا للشيعة أن يعتبروا عمله الفلسفي إجمالاً تراثاً فلسفياً لهم حق التصرف به.
في هذا الكتاب يقدم الباحث "عبد الأمير الأعم" دراسة جادة في نصر الدين، وهدفه إلقاء الضوء على هذه الشخصية الفذة والطارئة في تاريخنا، والتي استطاعت أن تؤسس المنهج الفلسفي في علم الكلام الإسلامي.
قسم المؤلف دراسته إلى ثمانية فصول، بين في الأول المصادر الأساسية التي يجب أن تعتمد في دراسته، وفي الفصل الثاني والثالث، قدم دراسة تاريخية موضوعية في حياته، أما في الفصل الرابع، فقد حاول أن يلقي بعض الأضواء على شخصيته، بشقيها الواقعي والأسطوري، استعرض في جميع مؤلفات الطوسي. وافرد المؤلف الفصل السادس للبحث في مكانته العلمية، أما الفصل السابع فقد خصصه لاستقصاء المواقف الفلسفية العامة في مؤلفات الطوسي في الأخلاق والتربية والتصوف، وفي الثامن والأخير كشفاً عن قيمته الفلسفية-الكلامية في الفلسفة السينوية، وفي بنائه وتأسيسه للفلسفة البحتة في علم الكلام الإسلامي لأول مرة في الإسلام. واستكمالاً لجملة من الفوائد المرجوة من هذه الطبعة للكتاب، أضاف المؤلف إليه عدداً لا يستهان به من المعلومات، ووثق كثيراً في نصوصه، كما ألحقت به نصاً تاريخياً يتصل بموقف الطوسي من هولاكو السفاح.
