يضم الكتاب مختارات من تأملات القديس أغوسطينوس، وهي مهداة الى الباحثين عن الحقيقة، الساعين الى الخير، الضاربين فس صحراء هذا العمر طلباً للسعادة. والتأملات هذه نابعة من ثاقب فكر القديس أغوسطينوس ومن نبيل قصره، ونير عقله، وأصيل إيمانه وعميق خبرته، وواسع اطلاعه، وهي الدليل الى النور الذي ينشدون، والمرشد الى الطريق الذي يمسكون. ومواضيع هذه المختارات متنوعة، يعالج فيها المؤلف، بدقة وروية، مشاكل الإنسان على اختلاف عصره وبيئته، بأسلوب شيق رصين، يجمع بين ذهنية المؤمن النيّرة، وعقلية الفيلسوف الواضحة الخطوط والقسمات، فيناقش علاقة الإنسان بخالقه، وبأخيه الإنسان، ويتصدى لأمور كثيرة تلازمه ملازمة الظلّ، كالموت والسعادة والحزن والألم والمال والعقاب والثواب، الى ما هنالك ممّا سيتوقف الإنسان في دنياه، ويرسم على دربه نقاطاً كبيرة من الإستفهام، غالباً ما يعجز وحده عن الإجابة عليها وحلّ رموزها. وجلّ ما يصبو اليه المترجم من ترجمته هذه، هو أن يضع بين أيدي قراء العربية كتاباً جديداً من قلم أغوسطينوس، الذي لم يعد غريباً عنهم، تذليلاً لصعاب عارضة، وتبديداً لشك قائم، وترسيخاً لإيمان لفحته سموم الكفر والإلحاد، وتشديداً لعزائم تتراخى، فيتمكن المؤمن، طالب الحقيقة، من متابعة سفرة الشاق في أرض غربته صوب الوطن السماوي الذي اليه يتوق، وعنه لم يجد بديلاً يطمئن إليه.
