تصف هذه القصة الجذابة، ذات الرسوم الجميلة، تصرفات القط الشقي مشمش وأخته القطة الشقية فلفلة، وكيف أن أمهما الطيبة القلب، قد غفرت لهما في النهاية، ما تسبب فيه عبثهما من نتائج.
ورسوم الكتاب رائعة ذات ألوان ساحرة، تشد الطفل إليها بما فيها من بهاء، وبما توحي إليه من خيال متمم لعنصر الحكاية.
وتجدر الإشارة إلى أن وراء هذه الحكاية الطريفة المسلية غاية تربوية ففيها توجيه غير مباشر للأطفال ليتعلموا تقدير نصائح أهلهم، وكيف أن عدم تقدير مثل تلك النصائح قد يؤدي بهم إلى الوقوع في المآزق. كما أن فيها تذكيراً للأهل بأن لأطفالهم الحق في أن يعبثوا أحياناً، لأنهم أطفال، ولذلك فإن الشخصيات التي نقابلها في هذه الحكاية، وفي سائر حكايات هذه السلسلة، شخصيات بشرية ألبست هيئة الحيوانات، لتكون أقرب إلى قلوب الأطفال، الذين يحبون الحيوانات ويأنسون بها.
ورغبة في الاستفادة من هذه الغاية التربوية ومن شعور الطفل بأنه جزء من هذا الجو المحيط به، فقد أوثر أن تخاطب الشخصيات على مدار الحكاية مخاطبة العاقل.
