«يتناول هذا الكتاب - بلغة عامة الناس، ومن دون أن يقتضي معارفَ سابقة - ما تحدّده اللسانيات لنفسها من غايات، وما تُـلقيه من أنماط الأسئلة، وما تتوخاه من طرقٍ لتوفّـر لها بعض الأجوبة». إجمالاً، إنه يسعى «إلى إعطاء فكرة صائبة قدر المستطاع عن فنٍّ معقّد وعن أهدافه ومناهجه».
يقدّم الكتاب المؤلَّف من ستّة أقسام: اللسانيات الوصفية (ما معنى الوصف في اللسانيات؟)، واللسانيات النظرية (ما معنى التفسير؟)، واللسانيات العامّة (ماذا ينبغي قبوله من المفاهيم الصالحة لجميع الألسن؟)، وفلسفة اللغة (ما هي العلاقات الجامعة بين اللغة من ناحية، والواقع، والفكر، والحقيقة، والفعل من ناحية أخرى؟)، واللسانيات التاريخية (كيف ولماذا تتطوّر الألسن؟)، واللسانيات التطبيقية (ما هي الفائدة التي تُـجنى من هذا؟). وفي ذيل الكتاب تُـعرض أسس الأسلوبية. إنه مدخل أساسي لعُلومية مجالٍ علمي.
