إن لفظ "إبستمولوجيا" الذي يعني حرفياً نظرية العلم, أختراع حديث, والثايت انه في قاموس لتريه ولا في معجم لاروس الموضح الجديد. ويؤكد معجم روبيران ظهور هذا اللفظ في المعجم التي كتبت بالغة الفرنسية يعود إلي ملحق معجم لاروس الموضح الذى صدر عام 1906. وفي هذا الوقت تقريباً, وهو نفس الوقت الذي ظهر فيه معجم لالاند الفلسفي, أعتبر جل لاشلييه لفظ "الأبستمولوجيا" جديداً, فمرد ذلك إلي أن الموضوع الذي يشير إليه هذا اللفظ ليس موغلاً في القدم. حقيقة أن كل فلسفة تحتوي علي مفهوم معين للمعرفة, ويؤكد هذا الأمر قديماً - علي سبيل المثال - أفلاطون في محاورة ثياتيتوس التي يعرض فيه نظريته في العلم بالمعني العام للكلمة. ولكن لفظ "العلم" قد أكتسب منذ القرن الثامن عشر معني أقل أتساعاً وأكثر تحديداً وهو المعني الذي نقصده حينما نتحدث اليوم عن (أكادمية العلوم أوالثقافة العلمية أو تطبيقات العلم... إلخ). ولقد كان من حق الفلافسة القدامي أن يحاولوا تحديد الشروط التي ينبغي لمعرفتنا بالطبيعة أن تحققها حتي تكتسب صفات اليقين الداخلي والصدق الشامل, التي يدونها لاتستحق تلك المعرفة اسم "العلم". غير إن يكون هذا العلم, هي ان نبدأ بممارسته.
