يستعيد مارتان في هذا الكتاب الفكرة المركزية القائلة بأن مفهوم الحقيقة هو أحد مفاتيح الاشتغال الدلالي، ليستقصي فضلها في تأسيس دلالية تخضع أكثر من سواها لمقتضيات الحساب والشكلنة، موضحاً عدداً من ألآليات اللسانية بالمقاربة المسماة "ظروف الحقيقة".
إن إثبات أمر ما يعني -وفق آلية "الحقائقية"- إنتاج لفظ حق. أما "ظروف الحقيقة" فتفترض أن المعنى لا بد أن تتوفر له الظروف حتى يكون حقاً.
باختصار، إن حقيقة اللساني حقيقة ترجع إلى "محيطات معتقدية"، وهي بطبعها لا تنفصل عن "الممكن"، أي "العوالم الممكنة". يضاف إلى ذلك أن المنطق الثنائي لا يكفي، فالحقيقة ها هنا "متعددة القيمة"، ويمكن القول إن الفكرة المركزية عند مارتان هي أن الحقيقة تبقى دائماً نسبية ذاتية وهو ما يندرج ضمن "المناطق غير الرتبية" التي عرفت مؤخراً تطوراً مهماً.
