هذا الكتاب هو صورة قريبة جداً لما تتسم به شخصية مؤلفه - ميخائيل عون - تبحُّر في البحث والمناقشة، دقة ملاحظة في المقارنة والاستنتاج، مرافعة دفاعية حين يرى للدفاع وجوباً، وأخرى ادعائية حين يجد للادعاء ضرورة، وبين الاثنين حماسة واندفاع. وعندما ندخل معه في مادة الكتاب نجد أن ميخائيل عون، حين يكتب عن مفكر يؤمن به، يتورط معه وفيه بحيث يجعل منه قضية تتسم بجرأة المواقف وصراحتها.
وجديد هذا الكتاب أنه يعالج سيرة الريحاني مثلاً، من خلال رسائله، مما يضفي على البحث حيوية وخصوصية تُسقِط عن السيرة كل جفاف متوقع. وقليلة هي الدراسات الريحانية التي عوَّلت على رسائل الأمين كمثل ما عوَّل عليها ميخائيل عون. وجديد هذا الكتاب أيضاً، أنه يتصدى لفكر الريحاني على ضوء ما صدر له من نتاج في الآونة الأخيرة، وفي طليعته كتاب "خالد"، "شذرات في عهد الصبا" و"وصيتي". الأمر الذي يكشف وجوهاً أخرى، أو جوانب مكملة، لأدب الريحاني وعصارته الفكرية. وجديد هذا الكتاب، وهو الأهم، أنه يدرس الريحاني من موقع ملتزم، أي من الموقع الذي دعا إليه الريحاني نفسه. وقليلة أيضاً هي الدراسات التي تصدت لتراث فيلسوف الفريكة بجدية التورط، وحيوية الالتزام.
ثم أن المؤلف شاء أن يُبرز في كتابه معالم الفكر السياسي عند صاحب "القوميات" و"التطرف والإصلاح"، فجاءت معظم فصوله لتتناول مناحي هذا الفكر من الإصلاح إلى الثورة، فالقومية العربية، والوطنية اللبنانية، والنضال ضد التعصب، ومن أجل السلام، غير أن بعض الفصول لا تعالج الشأن السياسي الخالص، بل تتصدى للشأن الحياتي والأدبي، كالفصلين الثاني والثالث، وهما يحملان العنوانين الآتيين على التوالي: من "وحي الرسائل"، وخالد الريحاني... "الرسالة والنبي". والبعض الآخر يتصدى للشأن السياسي بصورة مداورة.
