حظي هذا الكتاب الذي صدر لأول مرة عام 1984 بقدر من الرضى والقبول أكاديمياً وتعليمياً وثقافياً وطلابياً، ودرّس، وما زال، في غير جامعة عربية وغير عربية. كان هذا وغيره من تساؤلات حول قضايا الشعر العربي الموسيقية على مر الأعصر، حافزاً للمؤلف بهدف إعادة النظر في مؤلفه، ولكن في نطاق هدف تعليمي، وفي حومة نقله الجدل النقدي وتطوره المتسارع في الشعر العربي من معركة بين القديم والجديد شعر التفعيلة إلى صراع بين هذا "الجدير" و"الأجد" قصيدة النثر. في هذه الطبعة، باختصار: تهذيب، وإعادة ترتيب، وإضافات، وزيادات.
فأما التهذيب فقد عمل المؤلف على تنقية مؤلف من الأخطاء التي كانت في الطبعة الأولى، فكراً ولغة وأسلوباً. وإعادة الترتيب، فاقتضاها النظر المتجدد في "النسب" الموسيقي الإيقاعي بين البحور الذي جاز، حدود "القربى الشكلية إلى علاقات موسيقية دقيقة قد توصل إلى تداخل "الرقم الموسيقية" وتشابكها بين بعض الأوزان كما يحدث أحياناً، جرّاء الزحافات والعلل، بين الكامل والرجز، وبين الوافر والهزج. وأما الإضافات، فلا يكاد يسلم منها قسم من الكتاب، وخاصة الجزء الأول من المدخل، وعيوب القافية، والأوزان، وشعر التفعيلة، والتمارين. أما الزيادات الكاملة التي لم تكن من قبل، فهي هذه المباحث: الشعر المرسل، والشعر المنثور وقصيدة النثر، والأنماط الشعرية المتنوعة القافية، والضرورات الشعرية.
