"كانت تلك آخر صفحة في الكتاب، وكان أسفل الصفحة ملوثاً ببقعة كبيرة من صباغ بين قاتم، كأنما سكب عليه قهوة، أو وقعت عليه قطرات من سائل صدى. حاولت فرك الغلاف على أمل أن تكون صفحات أخرى قد التصقت به، بل حدثتني نفسي أن أخرق ذلك الغلاف لعلي أظفر بتلك الصفحات في ثناياه، ولم لم أضفر بشيء استبدّ بي الفضول لمعرفة بقية أحداث القصة، ولم استطع تلك الليلة النوم رغم أن الوقت كان متأخراً جداً، فجلست أنتظر ضوء لنهار وأنا أفكر في أحداث القصة ونهايتها التي أعرفها. في الصباح الباكر انطلقت إلى سوق الحميدية، وأخذت أبحث عن ذلك الرجل البخاري، طبعاً لم أجده، فقد فتحت المتاجر أبوابها، ولم يبق في السوق مكان لباعة الجمعة يعلقون عليه بضائعهم".
