يمكن للقرّاء والنقاد على السواء أن يعدّوا هذه الرواية من أدب الديستوبيا "أدب المدينة الرذيلة وهو النقيض التامّ لليوتوبيا"، لكنّها ليست رواية عن عالمٍ مستقبليّ ينذر بالمآسي وحسب، برغم أن وقائعها تجري فعلاً في المستقبل، بل هي خلاصة لرهانات الحاضر المرعبة الملأى بالخطايا والأخطاء والتي ستخلق مستقبلاً أشدّ رعباً.تتحدث الرواية عن العالم الذي سنخلفه نحن لأبنائنا، نحن الذين نبرع في تدمير الأرض وتلويث البيئة إلى الحدّ الذي سيجعل الآتي كابوساً، فبعد تغيير مناخي كبير تتغير صورة الأرض وتتغير معها الطبائع الإنسانية، ليجد المخلوق البشري نفسه متردداً بين إنسانيته القديمة والوحش الذي يخشى أن يصبحه.بناء جدار بين الإنسان والآخرين أسهل بكثير من بناء جسر بينه وبينهم، لكنه خيار مدمّر وله عواقبه التي تدور كل أحداث هذه الرواية في بأسلوب شيّق سهلٍ لكنه عميق للغاية.
