"في تلك الأثناء كانت خديجة الصغيرة قد اعتلت الصخور المشرفة على المستنقع، الصخور التي كمن خلفها أبوها راشد، ومن قبله جدها ألفونسو، فأطلت برأسها، فرأت أمها وقد ربض الوشق عليها عاضّاً على رقبتها، فصرخت مفجوعة بأعلى صوتها: واو! لم يأبه الوشق لها، فقد كانت فريسته جاهزة بين أنيابه ومخالبه، واستدار وجر فريسته من عنقها وهي بين قوائمه تسحب على الأرض، وعبر بها المستنقع إلى الجهة الأخرى، وتفر إلى الصخرة التي انقضى منها قبل لحظات وهو ما يزال قابضاً على فريسته بأنيابه. صرخت خديجة مفجوعة مرة أخرى وهي ترى أمها تسحب على أرض بين قوائم الوشق: واو. واو. أكان هذا تفجعاً على واو؟ لقد كان زعيقاً، بل كان أشبه ما يكون بالزئير. نعم.. أشبه ما يكون بزئير أمها عندما كانت تقابل عدواً لها. لقد وقفت الصغيرة موقف أمها قبل بضع سنين، وزأرت زئيرها".
تلك هي قصة "واو فتاة الجبل" التي يقترب الكاتب في فكرتها من قصة حي بن يقظان، وقد استبدلها بفتاة هي طفلة الكابتن فرانسوا الذي لاذ بالهروب مع زوجته وابنته ذات العامين بعد أن اقتحم الثوار العمانيين القلعة التي كانت من قلعته. وهكذا تشاء الظروف أن يموت الوالدان بعد أيام من هروبها لتبقى الطفلة وحيدة إلا من حيوانات أليفة ومتوحشة تحاول الطفلة مماثلتهم من أجل البقاء.
