الكتاب هو بمثابة حوار للدكتور هادي حسن حمودي مع دائرة المعارف وذلك على الرغم من اختلافه مع مؤلفها الشيخ الكرباسي بالكثير من المنهج والرؤى. وكلام الدكتور حمودي كلام يؤكد على أمرين؛ الأول: أن الاختلاف في الرأي أمر طبيعي، وهذا ما عهده البشر منذ نشأة الكون وقلق آدم عليه السلام، ولهذا أقر الناس أن الاختلاف في الرأي أمر طبيعي، وهذا ما عهده البشر منذ نشأة الكون وقلق آدم عليه السلام، ولهذا أقر الناس أن الاختلاف في الرأي لا يفسد للردّ قضية. الثاني: التأكيد على الحوار في محاولة للتقريب من وجهات النظر أو العثور على قاسم مشترك، أو على الأقل، إبراز نقاط الاتفاق ونقاط الاختلاف، لمزيد من الحوار، أو ربما لمزيد من الدرس، الآن أو غداً مع تطور العلم والتقدم الثقافي والفكري. والحوار الناجح والهادف هو الذي يتم بين مفكرين.
والكتاب يأتي في هذا الإطار والذي يبدو من خلاله أن الدكتور هادي حسن حمودي قد وجد في مسألة العقل التي استعرضها آية الله الكرباسي في باب الحسين والتشريع الإسلامي نظرية جديرة بالاهتمام ألا وهي عدم كفاية العقل لوحده في شروط المرجعية بل قيّدها بأمور لخصها بالتالي: "إذاً لا بدّ للفقيه أن يتحلى بعقلية قريبة من الفطرة الإنسانية والواقع المعاش والمذاق الإسلامي". مما حدا بالمؤلف الكرباسي إلى اعتبار هذا التوجه توجهاً علمياً يدعو إلى العقلنة التي ابتعد عنها الكثيرون في عصر باتت الأمة؛ بل الإنسانية إليها بحاجة أكثر مما سبق. هذا وقد عدّ الدكتور حمادي الشيخ الكرباسي صاحب دائرة المعارف الحسينية، في مصاف العقليين الداعين إلى هذا التوجه في كل مناحي العلم كالخليل الفراهيدي صاحب العين وجابر بن حيان صاحب الكيمياء، وأبي محمد الأزدي صاحب كتاب الماء وأحمد بن فارس صاحب النقد الأدبي.
