تجمع معظم المصادر على أن للعرب بعد الإسلام حضارة عظيمة شادوا مجدها وبنوها فأغنوا بها الحضارة الإنسانية وتشهد إنجازاتهم المتعددة لهم بذلك، ففي الطب والحكمة والرياضيات وعلم الفلك والفيزياء شواهد كثيرة على عظمة ما توصلوا إليه. لكن القليل من المصادر التي عنت بتاريخ العرب قبل الإسلام، وبالحضارة التي كانت لهم في تلك الأعصر حيث صور العرب على أنهم شعوب بدوية متخلفة لم تكن تعرف شيئاً من وسائل الحضارة ولم يساهموا بشيء يذكر في الفنون والعلوم والأدب.
والدكتور علي معظي في كتابه هذا إنما يكشف عن مدى ما توصل إليه العرب من علم وحضارة قبل الإسلام ويبحث في تاريخهم السياسي كما يقدم نقداً للنظرية السامية التي يكثر تداولها هذه الأيام، وهذه التسمية تطلق عادة على القوام والشعوب التي كانت تسكن منطقة الشرق الأدنى كالبابليين والآشوريين والأكاديين والكنعانيين والعبرانيين.
وقد شاع استخدام هذه التمسيه، منذ أن استخدمها العالم النمساوي أوغست سلوترز، إلا أن التوراة تخرج من دائرة الأصل السامي شعوباً كانوا على عداء مع اليهود كالفينيقيين والكنعانيين والسبئيين بينما تدخل أقواماً آخرين لا يعدون من الساميين. وعمد الباحثون المحدثون إلى التنقيب عن الخصائص المشتركة التي تميز شعوب الشرق الأدنى القديم.
يقع الكتاب في سبعة فصول، الفصل الأول قدم تعريفاً لبلاد العرب وعزز ذلك ببيان لبدء الوجود البشري في الأرض، ثم عرج الفصل الثاني على موضوع العرب والأصل السامي، قدم فيه المؤلف نقداً للنظرية السامية، وعقد مقارنة بين نظرية الأصل السامي والنظرية العربية، أما الفصل الثالث فتحدث عن طبقات العرب: العرب البائدة، والعرب الباقية، كما تناول الفصل الرابع بالدرس دول جنوب شبه الجزيرة العربية في عصور ما قبل الإسلام، والنظم السياسية في دول جنوب شبه الجزيرة العربية، في حين تطرق الفصل الخامس إلى دول وسط وشرقي شبه الجزيرة العربية في عصور ما قبل الإسلام بينما بحث الفصل السادس في دول منطقة شمال شرقي بلاد العرب أما الفصل السابع والأخير فكرس للحديث عن دول منطقة شمال غربي بلاد العرب.
