هذه الدراسة هي بمثابة قراءة جديدة ومعمقة لتاريخ دولة المدينة في عهد رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم، وللأحداث التي رافقته، في بداية الدراسة تم معالجة بيئتي مكة والمدينة المنورة اللتين عاش فيهما رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم، من نواحيهما المختلفة: الطبيعية والاجتماعية والاقتصادية والدينية، كما وتم دراسة حياة النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم بعمق منذ ولادته حتى هجرته، وما لاقى في مكة من اضطهاد وظلم.
ثم انتقل إلى "أعماله الداخلية" التي قام بها في المدينة على اثر هجرته إليها وتأسيسه الدولى الإسلامية فيها، ووفقاً للمصطلحات السياسية المعاصرة، وهنا تحدث عن نظام المواخاة الذي أرسى الرسول دعائمه وعن بناءه للمسجد الجامع، وعن تنظيمه العلاقات بين عناصر مجتمع المدينة، وعن موقف اليهود والمنافقين من الإسلام ورد الرسول صلى الله عليه وسلام.
أما أعمال الرسول صلى الله عليه وسلم العسكرية فشكلت مادة مهمة من مواد الكتاب، وفي هذا الجانب تم تناول أهداف القتال في الإسلام، وأنواع القنال في الإسلام، وطريقة إعداد الرسول صلى الله عليه وسلم للمقاتلين، وسياسة الرسول صلى الله عليه وسلم في المعركة، وتحضير الرسول عليه الصلاة والسلام للأعمال العسكرية، وهنا تم سوق نماذج عن حروب الرسول صلى الله عليه وسلم وتم إظهار سياسته التحضيرية للحرب.
هذا على صعيد أعمال الرسول صلى الله عليه وسلم الداخلية، أما أعمال الرسول الخارجية وتوحيده لشبه الجزيرة العربية فشكلت الجزء الثاني من البحث وهنا تم التطرق لصلح هدفه الحديبية، ولثمرات هدنة الحديبية ولنتائج إرسال الكتب إلى الملوك والأمراء، ولمسألة توحيد شبه الجزيرة العربية وأخيراً لمسألة وفاة الرسول صلى الله عليه وسلم وتأثيرها على المسلمين، ولمزيد من الإيضاح تم الإلحاق الكتاب بمجموعة من الملاحق الهامة التي تضمنت خطب الرسول إلى الملوك والأمراء ودعوته لهم للسلم أو للإسلام، كما وفي الكتاب خرائط مهمة تبين استراتيجية الرسول الحربية.
