تشير الإحصائيات الجنائية في كثير من دول العالم إلى أن العنف قد انتشر على نطاق واسع وزادت حدته حتى أصبح يمثل مشكلة اجتماعية أساسية في المجتمعات المعاصرة. ويذكر تيرنر (j.s. Turner) وهلمز (D.B.Helms) أن عدد ضحايا العنف في الولايات المتحدة الأمريكية قد فاق حالياً ضحايا الحروب والمجاعات والكوارث الطبيعية. ويرى ألبرت باندورا (Albert Bandura)-أحد أصحاب نظرية التفاعل الرمزي-ان معظم سلوك الإنسان يتم تعلمه عن طريق القدوة، ومن خلال عملية التقليد والمحاكاة. وقد حدد باندورا ثلاثة مصادر رئيسية للسلوك المتسم بالعنف في المجتمع الحديث، وتتمثل هذه المصادر في تأثير الأسرة، ووسائل الإعلام وخاصة التلفزيون، وتبني قيم الجماعات التي اكتسبت الثقافة الفرعية للعنف.
ويؤكد باندورا أن هذه المصادر تؤدي إلى ظهور العنف بدرجات متفاوتة داخل المجتمع. وتهدف هذه الدراسة بوجه عام إلى تعرف العلاقة بين بناء الأسرة ووظائفها. بوصفها إحدى مؤسسات التنشئة الاجتماعية-وبين اكتساب الشباب للسلوك المتسم بالعنف. ولهذه الدراسة أهمية نظرية وتطبيقية في آن معاً. فمن الناحية النظرية تهدف هذه الدراسة إلى محاولة التعرف إلى صحة بعض القضايا النظرية التي وردت في بعض النظريات الأساسية التي حاولت تغير موضوع العنف، وهي النظرية الوظيفية ونظرية التفاعل الرمزي، بالإضافة إلى التحقق من مدى صحة بعض التعميمات التي وردت في بعض النظريات، مثل نظرية الضبط ونظرية الإحباط-العدوان ونظرية الثقافة الفرعية للعنف كما أن لهذه الدراسة أهمية تطبيقية وعملية، إذ إنها تهدف إلى محاولة التعرف إلى إشكال أو أنماط العنف وأسبابه لدى الشباب الذين يشكلون فئة كبيرة الحجم في مجتمع دولة الإمارات العربية المتحدة، إذ يبلغ حجم هذه الفئة بين المواطنين في الفئة العمرية (15-24 عاماً) 115 ألفاً يمثلون نسبة 19,3% من مجموع السكان المواطنين في مجتمع دولة الإمارات العربية المتحدة البالغ عددهم 597 ألفاً عام 1995، ويمكن أن تساهم هذه الدراسة في إيجاد قاعدة معلومات لحصر مختلف أشكال العنف وأسبابه عند الشباب بطريقة موضوعية تساعد على توجيه السياسات الاجتماعية بهدف علاج مشكلة العنف لدى الشباب والتخفيف من حدة هذه المشكلة.
