يعد هذا الكتاب مدخلاً لدراسة ميدان علم الاجتماع الصناعي الذي أصبح يشكل تخصصاً فرعياً راسخاً داخل علم الاجتماع . وترجع أصول هذا الميدان إلي الأباء المؤسسين لعلم الاجتماع نفسه ، ويرتبط نموه خلال القرن العشرين بالتشجيع المستمد من أمل بعض إدارات الشركات أن تقدم البحوث الاجتماعية الصناعية مجموعة من الأساليب الإدارية والإشرافية التي يمكن أن تستخدم في حل مشكلات العمل ، والتخفيف من حدة الصراع الصناعي وزيادة الإنتاجية. ويبدأ الكتاب بالتعريف بميدان علم الاجتماع الصناعي ونشأته وعلاقته ببعض الميادين الأخري للدراسة في علم الاجتماع مثل علم الاجتماع المهني ، علم الاجتماع التنظيمي ، علم الاجتماع الاقتصادي ويقدم الكتاب استعراضا نقديا لأهم النظريات السوسيولوجية المعاصرة المستخدمة في تحليل العمل والصناعة ثم يعرض أهم موضوعات الدراسة الأساسية في علم الاجتماع الصناعي مثل تطور علاقات العمل في ظل نظم الإنتاج الصناعي ومشكلات العمل الصناعي والديموقراطية الصناعية ومشكلة الحرية داخل التنظيم الصناعي وتكنولوجيا المعلومات وعملية العمل والتنظيم الاجتماعي للمصنع والصناعة والمجتمع. وأخيراً يعرض الكتاب لبعض الدراسات التي تكشف عن النتائج الاجتماعية العامة والخاصة بالتصنيع.
