تتجلى أهمية هذه الدراسة في أنها تتناول فئة من أفراد المجتمع هي فئة المسنين، هذه الفئة التي لم تنل الاهتمام والدراسة بالشكل الكافي محل فئات الأطفال أو الشباب أو النساء، وهذا ما أكدته هيئات الأمم المتحدة التي ترى بأن المسنين في العالم لا يلقون الرعاية المناسبة، لذلك فهم يتعرضون للعديد من المشكلات التي لا يستطيعون مواجهتها، وتنعكس سلبياً عليهم وعلى أسرهم أو مجتمعهم.
من ناحية أخرى تعتبر هذه الدراسة الأولى في دولة الإمارات العربية المتحدة التي تهتم بالاتجاهات الأسرية نحو المسن واتجاهه نحو الأسرة التي ترعاه، وكذلك مفهومه عن ذاته في ضوء هذه العلاقة المتبادلة بينه وبين أسرته، يضاف إلى ذلك أن هذه الدراسة تناولت عينه من المسنين الكبار الذين تجاوزوا عمر 75 سنة، وهؤلاء يكونون في حاجة ماسة إلى الرعاية الصحية والنفسية والاجتماعية أكثر من غيرهم من المسنين الأصغر سناً. وبالتالي فإن دور الأسرة واتجاههم نحو رعاية هذا المسن الكبير يكون أكبر وأهم.
وتتجلى أهمية الدراسة أيضاً في أنها تناولت دور الأسرة التي تعتبر العنصر الفعّال والأساسي في رعاية المسن مقارنة بعناصر الرعاية الأخرى للمسنين، مثل الرعاية داخل المؤسسات الحكومية والمستشفيات والمؤسسات الخيرية وغيرها. وفي ضوء نتائج هذه الدراسة يتم وضع بعض التوصيات والمقترحات المفيدة في مجال دعم الأسرة في رعاية المسن، وكذلك الوقاية من أعراض الشيخوخة والمشكلات المترتبة عنها بشكل مبكر، حتى يتم تفهم قضايا المسنين في دولة الإمارات بشكل علمي وموضوعي والتخطيط لرعايتهم بشكل افضل، وتصحيح كثير من المفاهيم الخاطئة حول المسن أو الشيخوخة.
