يضم هذا الكتاب مقاربة لغوية تسعى إلى إبراز قضية المعجمية العربية وسبل تطويرها من خلال التوصّل لمواطن الأزمة في المعجم العربي، محاولة بذلك الوقوف على جوانب الأزمة المعجمية العربية وسبل حلّها. كما تسعى إلى إبراز حوانب الأزمة المعجمية ومنهج دراستها.
لقد بدأ الاهتمام بالمعجمات العربية يتزايد بعد عصر النهضة، مما دفع بهذه المقاربة إلى الوقوف على أسباب ذلك الاهتمام، متتبّعة أعمال المجمع القاهري من خلال معاجمه المتعددة سعياً منه إلى حلّ الأزمة المعجمية العربية.
لقد شكّل المعجم الوسيط منعطفاً خطيراً في تاريخ المعجمات العربية، سواء القديمة منها أو التي سبقته في العصر الحديث، وذلك أن عهدنا بالمعاجم العربية حتى منتصف القرن الماضي يتولى وضعها وتأليفها وجمع مادتها وتنظيمها، ورسم المنهج الخاص بكل منها العلماء والمعنيون باللغة العربية وتدوينها، معتمدين في ذلك أنفسهم، إلى أن قام مجمع اللغة العربية بالقاهرة في عام 1932م، وجعل من أهم أهدافه المحافظة على سلامة اللغة، وجعلها وافية بمطالب العلوم والفنون، والعمل على وضع العديد من المعجمات.
كما تناولت هذه المقاربة قضية تكاد تكون معدومة في الدراسات المعجمية العربية القديم منها والحديث، وهي قضية النص المعجمي، وما يتعلّق بها من قضايا مهمة سواء من حيث أنواع تلك النصوص، أم من حيث العناصر التي يحتويها النص المعجمي في الوسيط والتطبيق لذلك.
